WARSAW — If a school bus has its stop arm extended, you stop.
The Warsaw Police Department has recently reported school bus stop arm violations occurring on roads that have no divider or unpaved median.
If a bus is stopped and has its stop arm extended on a two-lane roadway or a multi-lane roadway with no divider or unpaved median, vehicles traveling in both directions must stop. When traveling on a divided highway with a divider or unpaved median, vehicles behind the bus must stop. Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction do not have to stop, but must proceed with caution. US 30 is an example of a divided highway with an unpaved median.
WPD posted a brief video on its Facebook page of a vehicle disregarding a school bus stop arm on Center Street, in the area of Papa John’s. The roadway does not have a divider or unpaved median, meaning vehicles traveling in both directions must stop for the school bus.

The above picture shows when vehicles need to stop for a stopped school bus. An example of a divided highway is US 30. Center Street is an example of a multi-lane roadway with no divider or unpaved median.
